I’ve worked on my own Porsche’s for the past 27 years, not glamorous. Here I share a few of my experiences with the Porsche 944 & 968. Maintenance concerns stops a lot of people from pulling the trigger, and the end up missing out.
Cheaper price, more restoration, more expensive…
So you want to know why not to go for a cheap one?
- Being an interference motor, if the timing belt breaks…New engine needed.
- 944S & S2 Cam tensioners fail.
- Rubber Everything. Especially with the fuel lines! But also weather stripping.
- The odometer gears go on all off them. Just like 928’s.
- Motor mounts, they often go bad and people keep driving them.
- Power steering racks leak, most local shops can rebuild them for you.
- DME

Simple cars, even easier to work on than any other Porsche…much easier than 928’s and 911’s of the time. Nearly every single part is still available, and prices are cheap. Yes you can overpay for maintenance, I’ve heard horror stories. But that’s not most of the cases, that’s why so many of them are still on the road today. Lots of ‘how to’ for every single part of the car, so if you like to work on cars yourself, this is the great starter Porsche. Just don’t buy someone else’s project, it will always be a project.
